Join us at Hillyer for an artist talk with visiting Taiwanese artist Kuen-Lin Tsai. Tsai will discuss his inspirations and creative process, followed by audience Q&A. Kuen-lin Tsai’s work is featured as part the exhibition “Starting from the Island, Contemporary Art from Taiwan,” presented in partnership with the Taiwan in the US and Taiwan Art Bank.

When it dawned on Kuen-Lin Tsai that he knew very little about his home country of Taiwan because his early education focused little attention on local cultures, he initiated an ongoing fieldwork archiving project covering different locations he visits. He begins with sounds in daily life and extending to cultural, acoustic, and imagery of countries where he has worked as a resident artist. His series “The Sound from Far Away” is comprised of a length of pipe twisted into amplifiers for subtle sound elements he has collected from his environment; as these amplifiers deliver these daily sounds, they also deliver the artist’s memory and impression of said environment.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:Born in Tainan, Taiwan in 1979, 蔡坤霖 Tsai Kuenlin is best known for his artworks made of plastic pipes. In recent years, he has also started using wood and canvas, thus expanding his artistic practice to other media. The form demonstrated through these materials often shows a “process” that audiences are invited to participate in. Therefore, his artworks never speak out in a direct way, but serve as media encouraging audiences to feel the works and to come up with new perceptive experiences through their physical awareness.
