This book is structured around the artist’s years of residency-based practice, interwoven with in-depth essays by six professional critics. It is accompanied by a handcrafted ceramic ring made from Taiwanese native clay, giving the publication both collectible value and significance as a research and reference resource.

Resonance Relics is a mid-term consolidation of artist Kuen-Lin Tsai’s “Resonance Relics” series. It brings together key turning points from his residencies since 2018 in Taiwan, Japan, Norway, and Australia, weaving together personal narratives and critical essays into a creative cartography of sound, material, and site.

The book not only documents how the works generate new modes of expression through underwater recording, clay-based sculptural practice, and environmental sound, but also reveals the artist’s nuanced reflections on sonic perception, the philosophy of resonance, and embodied experience.

Featuring essays by six art critics, the publication addresses topics such as East Asian landscape traditions, non-visual perception, material practices, and fieldwork methodologies. Richly illustrated and supplemented with the artist’s notes, the book offers a resonant pathway into the boundaries of perception and the material world for readers interested in sound art, field research, or environmental issues.

Designed around the core imagery of “water” and “sound,” the book features gradient-painted edges along three sides, evoking a sense of fluidity. The ceramic ring attached to the cover is handcrafted by the artist using native soils collected from across Taiwan, each fired with distinct glazes to produce unique textures and luster. The book also includes one postcard (selected from four variations), which, together with the ceramic ring, makes each copy a singular and unrepeatable object.
