The Nakanojo Biennale is an international contemporary art festival held every two years in Nakanojo Town, Gunma Prefecture. Surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery, Ramsar wetlands, hot spring villages with deep histories, sericulture, festivals, and traditional folk events, Nakanojo Town offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience beautiful satoyama culture that cannot be found anywhere else. Artists stay and work in this unique mountain village community and present their creations during the Nakanojo Biennale. For the tenth Nakanojo Biennale 2025, we are calling for a wide range of artists from Japan and abroad with innovative ideas and projects from various fields.
MOUNTAIN OF LIGHT
Silk thread was actively produced in the mountainous village area of northwestern Gunma prefecture since the Edo period. Additionally, iron ore, formed over tens of thousands of years by natural processes, was mined in Gunma Tetsuzan. Long ago in Gunma, families worked together to produce high-quality, shimmering silk threads, which spread across the world. During and after the war, a railroad was built to transport iron ore mined from the deep forests of the mountains. Lights illuminated the station buildings and the villages were bustling with workers.
The population exploded as industry thrived. Today, however, most of the sericulture farms and mulberry fields have disappeared, and the railroad tracks and stations that once transported iron ore were buried and only recently unearthed. We are reminded of that period through the remaining vacant houses, closed schools, and excavated modern ruins. Since the end of the era of silk and iron, a new wind of contemporary art has swept through the region. At the Nakanojo Biennale, the “Mountain of Light” is envisioned as an ideal landscape for the area’s future. Can we reach the utopian “Mountain of Light” as once depicted by folklorists and literary scholars, like Tokoyo, Nirai Kanai, and Ihatov? The Nakanojo Biennale 2025 marks its 10th edition and new developments will begin. We hope the story of these beautiful mountains will inspire hope for the future.
例如常世、Nirai Kanai(ニライカナイ)與 Ihatov(イーハトーヴ)的世界。
