Kuen-Lin Tsai Participates in the International Conference “Sound and Water: Toward a Hydroacoustic Ecology” at the University of Lille, France

From October 13 to 15, 2026, Taiwanese artist Kuen-Lin Tsai was invited to participate in Sound and Water: Toward a Hydroacoustic Ecology (Le son et l’eau : pour une écologie hydroacoustique), an international conference organized by the Centre for Contemporary Arts Studies (CEAC) at the University of Lille, France. The three-day conference explored the relationships between sound and aquatic environments, focusing on rivers, oceans, glaciers, and underwater sound. Discussions addressed climate change, ecology, sound perception, and interdisciplinary research between art and science.

The conference brought together artists and researchers from diverse fields, including artistic practice, musicology, aesthetics, art history, architecture, acoustics, ecology, glaciology, cognitive science, anthropology, and law. Through academic presentations, artwork exhibitions, and discussions, participants explored how sound can offer different ways of understanding aquatic environments, ecological changes, and human perception.

On October 14, Tsai presented his recent artistic research in a talk titled Invisible Sound: Underwater Sound and Perception. His presentation explored how underwater recordings, sensory translation, and material practices can transform sound into visual and sculptural forms. He also exhibited his sculpture The Deep Pool of Dabang, which examines the relationships between underwater sound, matter, and form. His participation contributed to interdisciplinary dialogue between sound art and ecological research, opening opportunities to exchange different cultural perspectives and artistic approaches to aquatic environments.
