“What is this work about?” “Why did the artist paint like this?” Similar questions are shared by many people when they see abstract pieces. It seems that there are a lot of secrets hidden in the artists’ creation—secrets that we want to know more about but do not have the courage to ask the question. Visible Secrets aims to give you a better understanding of abstract art by taking you through a journey back to its origin—visual music—as you learn to appreciate, feel, and interact with the works along the way.
As the iconic abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky believed, music and painting are both ways of communication. Music notes and melodies do not need lyrics to resonate with our hearts. Similarly, brushstrokes and colors in visual art can express themselves without the need for a theme. Unlike concrete descriptions, abstract pieces employ combinations and compositions of colors and of points, lines, and surfaces to express feelings deep in human souls. The feelings are indescribable: they are abstract emotions changing and flowing all the time.
The exhibition presents 16 pieces from Art Bank Taiwan’s collection, highlighting certain features of visual music in them: rhythmic pulses, abstract forms, color correspondences, awareness of time, and issue advocacy. The 14 artists who created the works may have been inspired by a music band they loved; they might be performing their songs on canvas using colors and shapes; they could have created this piece of conceptual installation as a response to their observation about contemporary digital technologies and social environment. You are encouraged to open your senses to explore this rich secret world of art.
